02: The Perfect Orange

Over the decades, women have experimented with different shades of red with the hopes of finding one that best suits them.  Red has always stood out to me and will always be in style, in my opinion.  Red is classic.  Is red always fun though?  Maybe not.  Enter this summer's biggest trend, seen on the catwalk and on all the hot celebs -- orange!

While I do feel that choosing a red shade according to skin tone is vital, we can be a little less strict with orange.  After all, it really is meant to put a fun spin on lipstick.  So with a little bit of trial and error, you can find something that you feel spunky in.

I took the liberty of trying out 3 different brands and shades, not just to come up with my personal favorite, but also so I could give my opinion on what could work for others.  Take a look:
MAC Neon Orange
My personal fave.  How fun is that?
YSL No. 21 Orange Sari

L'Oreal Color Riche in Orange Fever
Hmm...not loving it on me, but perhaps on someone with a golden tan skintone?

As you can see, I have tagged MAC Neon as my personal favorite.  I just feel that it is so vibrant, youthful and while I feel that this works with my fair skin, I can even picture this shade on someone with much darker skin. The YSL shade, on the other hand, is pretty with it's reddish mix, but probably more interesting for a summer eve rather than a vivid, summer day.  Lastly, L'Oreal Orange Fever seemed a bit too intense on me, in the sense that it nearly didn't look orange anymore against my skin, but I think that golden tan or olive-skinned ladies could rock this one.

Now if you're hesitant about investing in these types of brands for what you think may be a split-second fad, then I suggest you check out brands like Revlon, Maybelline or even lipstick palettes from Suesh or MOI Cosmetics in order to get more than just your orange dry run out of your purchase.  However, if you do happen to buy one of the pricier brands and it exits your makeup case before the trend phases out, then remember that you can always use it as a cheek stain or even a color corrector for dark, under-eye circles when mixed with your regular concealer.

It is my belief that women, at least the true makeup fanatics, treat lipsticks like companions.  Even if we may be just looking at a summer fling, we still want to make it feel right.  So I encourage you to get out there, test some out, be playful and have fun...with your search for the perfect orange.
